Buckbrush (Ceanothus cuneatus). Evergreen shrub. Fragrant flowers, most impressive when backlit. Fragrant, too. Very drought tolerant.
Sticky Monkeyflower (Mimulus aurantiacus). Evergreen shrub. Although they won’t be attractive, withholding water in summer to let the plants go dormant will extend their lifespan. This is the companion plant for Indian paintbrush.
Hummingbird Sage (Salvia spathacea). Evergreen perennial. A good plant for open shade. As its name says, hummingbirds like the flowers.
Blue Dicks (Dichelostemma capitatum). Bulb.
Miner’s Lettuce (Claytonia perfoliata). Annual. If you came to our February meeting, you might have snacked on the leaves of this plant. It tastes similar to romaine lettuce.
Man-Root (Marah sp.). Herbaceous vine These vines in the squash family grow rapidly from underground tubers, disappearing in summer’s heat.
Fiddlenecks (Amsinckia sp.) Annual. This is typically one of the first annuals to bloom, coloring sizable areas with its yellow flowers.
