Beardtongue (Penstemon sp.)

The Beardtongues, or Penstemon in Latin are coming into full bloom. P. ‘Marguerita BOP’ is possibly the most planted, but other species are also in flower. Since they can hybridize and many species are similar, they can be a bit difficult to identify when found growing in a garden – as is the case with these plants, probably some variety of P. heterophyllus.

Most Penstemons prefer good drainage, so plant them on mounds if your soil tends to hold water. Colors range from blues and violets to pinks and reds to creamy white, with blues and reds being the most common.
